African Origins
Unit 1: African Origins is the perfect starting point for anyone teaching or learning African history and African American history. This unit gives scholars a powerful, eye-opening introduction to African history before the transatlantic slave trade. Across 11 lessons, learners explore the continent’s geography, ancient kingdoms, religious and cultural traditions, the rise of West African empires, and the true roots of African Americans and the global African diaspora. The unit also examines key encounters between African societies and early European powers, culminating in a deeper understanding of how African American ancestors shaped—and were shaped by—the "discovery" of the New World.
Designed to be easy to teach and instantly engaging, each resource helps students build accurate knowledge of Africa’s achievements, diversity, and worldwide influence. Unit 1 sets the foundation for deeper learning—making it the perfect place to begin your AP Black Studies journey.
Each lesson aligns with the College Board’s AP African American Studies framework and includes structured notes, scaffolded reading packets, and skills-based activities that support inquiry, literacy development, and evidence-based reasoning.
